The Beech Tree In Magic

History, Learning, Writing, Chronicling, Genealogy, Wisdom of the Ancestors,
The Family Tree, Time and its passing,  Planet: Mercury, Saturn
Element: Air, Earth. Beech is the feminine consort to the masculine Oak.

Fagus sylvatica or any of the 11 other species of beech are easily
distinguished. The tree canopy casts dense shade, and carpets the ground
with a dense litter of golden-brown leaves while their massive trunks are
clothed in a smooth silver-grey bark.

Throughout the beech forests of England there are trees hundreds of years
old that are marked with the initials of lovers long passed. It was known
that, when a couple was in love they could carve their initials into a beech
tree and enclose them with a heart and in so doing, they made known to the
Gods that they wished to stay in love forever and to be blessed in marriage.
These are living examples of beech trees being used for magic and for recording
family lines.

The wood of the beech has a fine, short grain that splits easily and evenly
providing an excellent surface for risting and carving. Beech trees are the
favored trees for wood upon which the Runes are carved. To make yourself a
talisman of beech you can create your own Runetine by fashioning a small slip
of beech wood (about 1" wide by 4" long with the grain going lengthwise) and
upon it carve a wish dear to your heart. Carve against the grain. I suggest
you use The Runes as they are more powerful than an alphabet, they are first
and foremost magical symbols. When your desire is risted (carved) you will
redden them with a red paint or ochre. Advanced Rune Magicians use their own
blood to give the Runes life from their very veins. Then the tine is breathed
into life by blowing on it three times. Carry this with you until your desire
is manifested and then, burn or bury it with your thanks.

Beech is a good wood for recording and recovering the wisdom of the ages, and
beech wood or leaves should be burned as an offering if you are a scholar or a
clairvoyant chronicler who receives messages from the Gods about the past or from
Spirits of those long dead. Genealogies can be compiled upon paper made of beech
pulp so as to keep for posterity the order of the family line.

The word book has come down to us from the word for beech. "The Old English bōc
and Old Norse bók both have the primary sense of “beech” but also a secondary
sense of “book”, and it is from bōc that the modern word derives. In modern German,
the word for “book” is Buch, with Buche meaning “beech tree”. In Swedish, these
words are the same, bok meaning both “beech tree” and “book”." Wikipedia.

It makes an excellent pulp for magical paper. The tri-lobal beech nuts yield
an oil that is used in lamps for magical rites. And beech groves are wonderful
places to hold rites to the Ancestors.

Making A Magical Scroll

To make a Magic Scroll you will need a roll of paper and the supports for the scroll.

To make the supports obtain a dowel of the proper thickness and a wooden finial.
Finials are decorative caps that are used at the end of dowels, they are available
at many hardware and millstores. Most have pre-drilled holes in their base to
accommodate the dowel but you may have to drill a hole to take the dowel of your
choice.

Cut the dowel to a length slightly longer than the width of the paper you will be using
for your scroll (This measurement is the short side of the paper).
Drill the holes in the finials and lay them aside.

Choose a length of paper that is as long as you wish the completed scroll to be plus
2 inches and as wide as your supports are long minus a bit at the end for the finial.
Taking a strong paper glue fold one short edge around one dowel and glue it over
on to itself so that it is securely around the dowel and centered so that there is equal
room at each end of the dowel. Repeat with the other end taking care to fold the edge
of the paper in the same direction. (They should both be on the back of the paper)
Leave to dry.

When dry glue the inside of the hole in each finial and cap both ends of  each dowel.
Leave to dry.

When dry Start to roll the paper around each dowel so that they meet in the center all
rolled up. You may wish to affix a ribbon to the center back of the scroll and leave the
ends free so that you can tie your scroll closed.

For a more natural scroll you can gather dried strait twigs and strip them of the bark.
Use acorns, nuts or tumbled stones as finials. Think carefully and create the best scroll
for your needs.

When your  scroll is finished you need only pick up your quill and dip it into your
magical Ink and start writing important spells, perhaps in Runes or a Magical Alphabet.

Magical Herbal Paper Making Techniques

Make your own paper for use in magical writing and spell work by recycling
old paper and adding herbs and flowers is simple, beautiful and powerful

choose the paper you want to recycle, you can use any paper but I recommend
paper that is more natural to begin with and less processed. Tissue paper
and brown paper bags as well as manila and construction paper. Computer
paper and writing paper can also be used, especially if you want a whiter
paper. Cut or rip the paper up into small pieces 3/4 to 1/2 inch square.
Boil some water in a pot and add the paper bits, let stand untill the fibers
disintegrate, from a few hours to a couple of days depending on the paper
you are using. When the paper shreds reach a pulpy stage place that in a
blender with about two cups of water. Blend for 15 seconds and then check
it, you just want it to separate into fibers and not too much more than that,
if necessary blend for another 10 seconds or so. Place this pulp into a bucket
and add some water. You may add any dried magical herbs at this time.

Construct a small frame from fine screening and 4 pieces of wood the size and
shape you desire. Mix the pulp with your hand to excite the fibers in the water.
Place the screen in vertically and shift it horizontally near to the bottom of
the bucket. Raise it slowly to accumulate the wood particles upon the screening
frame. Keeping the frame horizontal. While the pulp is still wet and draining,
place any dried flowers and herbs you wish to have as part of your finished
paper on top of the sheet and if necessary carefully spray over with water to
wet and fix the flowers to the pulp sheet. Set the frame to dry over night.
When it drys flip the frame and free the sheet from it. This may require cutting
at the edges to free the finished paper.

If you would like to make a very specialized piece of magical paper you need
only carefully choose the herbs and plant material with which you plan to
impregnate it with and possible an oil with which to scent it. Some good choices
would be:

Money paper; Clover, Patchouli, Cedar, Basil, Fern,
Love paper; Rose petals, Chamomile, Violet, Yarrow, Apple blossom,
Air Spell paper; Rosemary, Lavender, Sage, Lemongrass, Marjoram,
Earth spell paper; Mugwort, Patchouli, Cypress, Narcisis, Honeysuckle, Vervain
Fire spell paper; Sunflower petals, Carnation, Heliotrope, Bay, Tobacco
Water spell paper; Lemon balm, Eucalyptus, Lilac, Heather, Cherry blossom

The Rose in Love and Magic

By Fern, OCS Herbalist
--------------------------------------

"A single flow'r he sent to me, since we met,
All tenderly his message he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet -
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the flower;
"My fragrant leaves," it said, "His heart enclose."
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose."
-- Dorothy Parker

The rose has been the most familiar and enduring symbol of love for centuries.
The Queen of Flowers herself stands for the deepest passions of the human heart
So inseparable is this grand flower from the emotion of love that not
surprisingly roses are presented to a lady love on any number of occasions to
pronounce what is in a man's heart better than if he were a poet.
No profession of love, no Valentyne's Day, no Wedding, indeed no Summer's
day would be complete without them.

Ladies themselves gravitate toward her beauty as it inspires them to
their fullest potential as one who shall be loved. More than beauty
alone the turgid blossoms unfurl with grace and dignity, bejeweled in
prismatic dew drops. Strong and stately stems display a lovely line of
protective thorns, none shall asail her. The scent of a rose conjures
pure joy, her entire being a blessed sight to behold.

In the age old language of flowers roses hold myriad meanings,
The leaves of a rose: Hope
A single rose: I Love You!
Red roses: True Love, Forever, Beauty
Pink Roses: New Love, Gentle Love
White roses: Purity, Virginity, Marriage
Purple Roses: Love at First Sight, I am Enchanted by you
Yellow Roses: Friendship

Any love spell you design will likely include the rose.
The roses favored for a love spell are pink for romantic love and red for
passionate love and sex. Candles of either of these colours and rose oil or incense.
Rose quartz crystal (heart shaped if you can find it) and petals from your
chosen rose. A red rose for eternal passion and a pink for simple or new love,
if you are not sure how strong the love is between you or how deep you wish things to be.

If you want your love to remember you, add rosemary. It stimulates the mind
and the memory. Take care, if there are bad memories or slights they will also
be remembered. To remedy this use rose (love), rosemary (remembrance) and lavender,
(forgiveness).

Set up your spell, light the incense, anoint the candle with the oil of rose.
Light the candle and speak of the love you desire, asking it to come into your life.
After the candle is burned take the wax, herbs, petals and rose quartz together and
make a sachet to carry with you.

For dreams of the one you will love place fresh rose petals under your pillow.
This is done by men and women equally. For ladies, place dried rose petals
in your drawers and between your sheets to draw love to you.
